Why? I am trying to learn, so why would you date it such?

The reason I'm dating it pre-CW is because it has characteristics of several suspender buckles I have which are 1850ish. They are generally made of brass, thin, and have some type of embossment. The ones I have pictured are not like Mike's, but are from the same era. I can't find the particular one(stuck in one of many shoeboxes) that has a scene on it, but it's similiar to his. It is also my understanding these types of suspender buckles were used (by civilians) during the Rev. War period up through the Civil War.

Those two upper right look like garter buckles. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,140034.0.html

Yes, they are garter buckles, but I think they are from the same time period. I was trying to find a website, and stumpled on to this one; it has our Paris Solide buckle (3 row from the bottom) http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/glevumdetecting/buckles.htm

I think I recall seeing the patent for the back attachment of that clip. As I recall it was firmly Victorian (1880s/90s). The stylization of the bird design on the first clip in the original post makes me think it dates from this time frame as well, since it bears some resemblance to Chinese and Japanese art.

Buckles, you are right. I didn't find the exact buckle I was looking, but did find another embossed one, and it is marked: Pat. May 29, '94. I can't post a pic now because I'm 'working,' but will do so later tonight. Breezie

Im not very knowlegable on suspender buckles but I would guess late 1800's. I have a hook type suspender patent in 1871.

Hey suspender mavens... :D

It is good to see a variety of these for comparison. 4-H that one you posted looks amazingly similar to the one I found over the last weekend. I have this to add. The spot where mine was found is my wifes' great-grandparents place. There is nothing left but some odds and ends and a boat load of square nails. I have found two 1876 seated dimes there. This, along with the family history, puts a fairly good date on the clip. There has been no one living there since. It is in the middle of a field. Granted there has been folks walking and hunting here ever since, but I wouldn't think they would have lost a suspender clip.
Good luck to all.

Definitely post Civil War. Snap hooks in combination with a suspender buckle began in 1868. I believe your buckle is from the 80's or 90's like BuckleBoy said. I believe this is so with this style of buckle with large animal motifs. I study suspender buckles and other clothing artifacts in my group. I haven't posted anything on snap hook suspender buckles yet, but I will one day. Nice find!
