A friend found this today. I'm assuming it is a suspender clasp but I'm wondering if anybody can tell me about the design. It seems like it might be something from a fable or legend, or maybe has to do with the lions and the Christians, or maybe none of that. I've tried Google but that has failed me so I came to the guys that have amazed me so many times before.

The area this was found in was settled primarily by French Canadians in the early 1860s, if that helps.

cool looking piece. Looks like the lion is under some kind of stone bridge. I found a suspender clasp with an elephant on it a couple years ago

I believe this motif is referred to as "The Lucerne Lion".

Hope this helps.

I located the Lucerne Lion, too (thought about posting it here) and agree that there are a lot of similarities... the arrow in the side, the lion laying down, the arch over its back. But every depiction I saw of the LL had it looking forward, not back as this one is doing. And the arch over its back was a cave, not brick or cut stones, like this one. So, I'm kind of on the bench about that as an answer... it has a lot right, for sure. (Hmmm... I wonder if maybe this one was created from a verbal description or by memory of the LL?)

I have one of those with the elephant as well. One of my favorites.

Iron Buzz, cool clasp:occasion14: After looking at images of LL, if no one on TNet positively IDs your find, your theory of someone creating it from a verbal description or by memory of the LL seems reasonable.
