Surface Finds

I hunt some areas where the dirt is worked up. When I go back after a rain to detect, I keep my eyes open for the surface finds. I sometimes find marbles so I pick those up. I have even found a V-nickel and Indian Heads. The rain seems to wash the dirt off and they are exposed. After a good rain I head out early. Best coin I found this way was an Seated Dime. Hope others make some interesting finds this way too.

I used to travel to northern Alabama to visit friends, while there I'd hunt arrowheads. The best time to go was after a hard rain, the arrowheads would be sitting on top of little dirt "pillars" and were easy to spot! Great finds Free! Thanx for sharing!

I see you've got a few marbles of the type commonly referred to as "Bennington" or "bennies" something of a misnomer but a commonly accepted one. ?These can fetch 40-50 bucks in some places. ?On occasion I find them in parkways that are overturned. ?One time I stopped in at an estate sale and there was a tin of old marbles in one case. ?When it came up for bid, three women had established they were going to bid on it and positioned themselves near it. ?I thrust the Lil' Lowbatts in amongst them and whispered aloud to her unsuspecting ears how Daddy would do anything to get those pretty marbles for here.

These women all sighed, then looked down on her cherubic face and stepped back. ?I took the tin for 6 bucks, lots of bennies, cerulians, etc.. in it and the tin was a Thorne's Premier Toffee witha picture of highlanders and dragoons in some desert-like setting with an audience.

Here's a shot of that tin:

Can't beleive the value people put on some things and even though I am a real capitalist, Lil' Lowbatts sez she'll have Daddy stuffed and hung from an overpass if I sell anything w/o her approval. All goes back to her Beannie Baby beginnings...

Your daughter sounds like a hoot :)

Enjoy that one while you can at that age, they grow up so darn fast!

Both of 'em are pretty much grown now. Lil' Lowbatts is a High Schooler at last and a seasoned detectorist. The odler one is long grown now. Somewhere back in these pages we have her story of the class ring lost 20 years that she found last summer and we got returned after quite a search in time for the 20th class reunion of the gent who lost it. I believe he said he was gonna skip the trip to the reunion, which might have made it a bit more interesting of a story. He lost the ring when he first got it, in his senior year. It looked like it had been worn a long time when Lil' Lowbatts found it. It might have surprised who ever had taken it when he showed up wearing it. Then again it could have been a high school sweetheart thing gone sour, so maybe better the story is left to imagination.

We have a lot of wind around here, epically in the spring. A gentle breeze is 15 to 25 mph & the wind starts at 35 with some days at 50 all day. Occasional storms to 100+ MPH. We had a breezy day last week & I went to the river beach the next day. Found several surface coins in the sand, some standing on edge & several finds with the old DFX. Wind & rain can both work to our advantage. You can go back to the same place every time the weather changes & it's a whole new game. Spotz

Nice marbles Free, my grandparents house was once used as a Knights of colombus meeting hall and the eve's in the attic were full of old marbles and "tickets" from them. Not sure what the purpose of the marbles was, but I scored an old sword jamed in the rafters with the KOC engravings on them so I didn't push the subject.
