Sunflower field find

So I went to a sunflower farm with my family and was given permission to walk up and down the fields of flowers. Wasn't really expecting to find anything too great, but it was on a field overlooking water. So I came upon a lot of chert, but nothing too exciting, and then stumbled upon this. Always fun to find hard stone artifacts. Great pecking evidence also.

I don't have much of an artifact education, so please excuse
the dumb question. :icon_scratch:

It looks to me like a rock that has spent time in moving water,
but otherwise I don't see anything unusual about it. What makes
it an artifact?

It was more than likely in a field overlooking water that didn't normally flood, making it prime camp ground. Likely that's a hammer stone that was used in making preforms.

No doubt a hammerstone but as the op pointed out ...it has been seriously pecked. Unusual for a bannerstone. I would guess the pecking was to make it more abrasive although it isn't ground and polished afterward. Clearly an artifact. Thanks for posting.

Great find! I have never ventured into a sunflower field, are you able to get eyes on bare soil without getting ripped to shreds by the foliage?

How far from the ocean? Looks like a ballast stone
