sunday's slot machine hunt

This past Sunday my wife said I had the whole day to do whatever I wanted. Well sort of, I had already had plans to go metal detecting near my wife's grandfathers house for the day at a farmhouse built around 1912 that was in foreclosure and nobody had lived there for 2-3 years.

Unfortunately, the MD'ing at that house didn't produce much, just some recent clad, a few memorial pennies, a bent key, a couple of buckles, and a recent matchbox car. Note, the yard was really really trashy so it was hard to get good non-iron signals and almost every swing seemingly had at least 2-3 iron signals.

After a late lunch (around 5 pm) I decided I was going to try my luck at slot machine coin hunting since I was already over half way to the nearest non-coinless casino in my area. On the way to the casino I tried MD'ing at a small town baseball field for an hour or two. Did a little better there, but still only found recent stuff (mainly pennies). Still waiting for my first silver coin....oh well gotta keep trying.

There was actually 2 casinos on my route. The first one I had never been at, but had wanted to check out. It was quite small, but had nickels and quarters. Ran through $198 in quarters and found nothing. Though I thought I heard somebody say "I have a whole roll of silver, but the machine won't take silver." If I was sure who said it I would have asked what they meant. I am assuming it has to do with the $1 tokens and not quarters, but who knows.

After my brief stop there, I went to my main destination which was just up the road a bit. My goal was to search quarters and half dollars and bring some nickels home to search later.

My first $100 in quarters produced a 1964-D, so I was hopeful of a good night, but it was not to be. The halves were particularly stingy and I didn't find my first silver until after I had gone through $1200 worth.

All told for the night at the second casino I went through $2000 in halves and $2000 in quarters.

The halves produced 3 - 40% Kennedys. I don't remember the dates off hand.
The quarters produced 2 silver quarters (1947 and 1964-D) and 1 foreign quarter (East Caribbean States, 2004)

I date searched the halves, but only edge searched the quarters.

I did pick up $70 in nickels on the way out the door as well, but I haven't searched those yet. All-in-all a fun day, just wish the results were better.

Just remember gman, a bad date MDing/CRHing is still better than a good day at work.

Hang in there.

How's this casino run work? You ask for $2,000 in quarters for the machines, don't use the slots, go through the quarters and then throw them into some counting machine? Sounds like a good deal to me - I might try this some day.

Do they give you free drinks?

Step 1: Insert Cash ($100) into machine.
Step 2: Press the "Cash out" button.
Step 3: Remove coins from machine one handful at a time and search through them.
Step 4: Place reject coins in cup and keepers in pocket.
Step 5: (Optional) Switch machines so that you don't have to wait for the machine to be refilled
Step 6: Repeat steps 1-5 until you have enough that you cannot easily carry them to the cashier ($300 usually just about filled 2 cups where I was.)
Step 7: Cash in rejects
Step 8: (Optional) Wash hands
Step 9: (Optional) Decide that you have had enough for one day/night and leave
Step 10: Repeat steps 1-9

In MN the only free drinks are pop, lemonade, and similar things. You have to pay for the other stuff.

If you are going to try and the casino is not close, it may be worth a call to confirm that the casino is not coinless as many are these days. The two casinos closest to my house are virtually coinless or use the $1 tokens which are pointless to search.

Re: sunday's slot machine hunt

Yup, I checked the two casinos in CT and they are now coinless. :( Perhaps there are casinos near where I'll be for business trips, etc. It'd certainly be easier than rerolling.

Re: sunday's slot machine hunt

Opened the $70 in nickels tonight....nothing special in them at all.
