Hello fellow Pirates!

Have had a great hunt the last 2 times I went out. Sunday afternon was a beautiful day for the beach. The water is exceptionally clear for this area this year. Usually visibility is 1-2 feet, now it is 3-5. Not much compared to Florida or Hawaii, but for is, its great.

On Friday I had 2 excellent hunts, and most of my success was in a small area. I had a bunch of good rings from just walking paralell to the beach, so I decided to grid out that area on Sunday. It turned out to be a good idea, as the rings kept popping up! No gold and no silver, but a couple of firsts for me, and once Very nice ring indeed.

There were junkers of course:

And there was this Titanium ring with a .01 carat diamond. The inside is engraved, "Always and Forever", and apparently, it wasn't forever enough! I was excited about this one, but found this exact ring for sale online for $19. I was hoping for a good deal more, but, it is still a neat find, and my first unusual metal that was stamped.

Then, the last ring I found was a lunker! Although it is Tungsten Carbide, I was thrilled to look this ring up and find it retailing for $400!!! It has to be one of the most beautiful bands I have found, and you can see the incredible luster in the reflection of the band. My wife and I both love this ring. It also has ATRCARVED stamped inside.

So after my good fortune Sunday, I decided this morning to grid out the area adjacent to where I had been. Things started slow, 45 miniutes to an hour went by, and I had one sinker and a pice of copper foil. I thought I had made a big mistake in skimping on sleep, waking at 2:30 am, and going hunting before a long hard day of work. After that initial dry period, I started picking up a good number of coin targets in the water. Then a interesting but cheap bracelet, and junky earring. (I like to at least get some jewelry each trip, however cheap it may be :)) As I neared the end of my hunt, I picked up a solid nickle signal in the surf. Tired of losing targets, and deep coins, I was tempted to walk past it. But man was I ever suprised to hear silence after only 3 scoops, then look in the scoop, and see the outline of a ring in the dark gloomy night! I ran to shore, not wanting to risk dropping it in the water, and did a happy dance, hooted, hollered, and scared the hell out fo a flock of seagulls. I couldnt see it well in the dark, but by the sound, I knew it had to be gold. My wife had a trip to our jeweler planned today anyhow, and she took this ring along with her. Sure enough, the diamonds are real, and it is 14k gold(it was stamped .23 ct, and there was no gold stamp). Man this little ring is perty!

So I did 2 more grids up and down, and headed for home as excited as could be. That ring made my night. As I was heading home, I went to the closest lifeguard chair to check the dry sand a little. I tend to find a lot of clad around them, and the occasional piece of jewelry(even gold once). Get there, and nail a penny quickly. Im thinking, "sweet! noone has hit this one yet". Make my way around, and find just trash. Sadden a tad, I turn to head home, but before I do, I check the top of the chair, because I have found coins laying on them that havent made their way to the ground yet. Well, I didnt find coins, but instead, I saw a purse sitting there. I looked around, and having not seen a single person for the 3 hours I had been there, I knew someone had forgotten it. Not wanting it left, I brought it home, and tried to see what clues I could find to get it home. There was a good bit of stuff to go on, including a cell phone that was on fortunatly. I decided to send a text message to a few names on her list asking for help, hoping to get a response from her. She must have had 200 names to go through, but I managed to find a listing for Dad, so I selected him, and the guy that texted her the night before, to send my message to. Since it was about 6 am, I decided to wait a bit before doing so, not wanting to be rude. So come a bit past 7, I start my message. Halfway through, the phone rings, and I answered, hoping to get some clues:

"Hello"
"Um, Rachael?"
"Actually, I found this phone in a purse this morning, and I was hoping you could help me find who it belongs to."
Then she said something to someone with her.
"Rachael, there is some guy on the phone who wants to return your purse"

What luck!! Not a half hour later, they met me at work, and she had her purse back in hand. And I am happy to say she thanked my nicely with a huge hug ;D. I was pleasantly suprised, and then she was on her way. And then I kicked myself for not getting a photo of the return! DOH! But oh well, it will be a very memorable return for me, as she was beyond grateful. And I dont blame her one bit, the things she had would have been very difficult to replace.

So there ya go, my last 2 hunts ahve been profitable, fun, eventful, and enjoyed. Thanks for reading, hope I didnt bore you, and Happy Hunting!

WoW! I wish I had your luck! I have your detector, but not your luck. :icon_scratch:

Great job, both on the hunt and the return of the purse! I tried to return a wallet I found on the beach in June, but the outcome I don't think was as happy. The ID in the wallet was for a gentleman from Woodbridge, Va. I used my superior detective skills to find a phone number for his residence and called the number. A woman answered the phone and I explained that I had found "John's" wallet on the beach here in Virginia Beach. Instead of a thank you, I got "that son of a B*$#&^, he's supposed to be in Charlottesville!"

Then she hung up.

I shipped the wallet to the address. I can only hope he survived to recieve it.

It is mostly due to the information I have gleaned from all of the experts both here, and on the beach that I have met, that I am able to find the goodies. I am also an eager student, always looking to learn more. And, I am motivated to get out there every day at least once.

And, if what skill i think I have doesnt really exist(more likely), I spend 30-40 hours a week in the water/wet sand. So with that kind of time in, im bound to find something. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then :).

Dave - that is hilarious, I love her reaction. Perfect candid camera moment, and I am sure he survived, althought I am not so sure he is happy to have had it returned in that fasion. Thanks for that story, thats a good one :).
