I’ve gone turf hunting 3 times recently at three separate parks and came away with a ’39 merc, ’46-D & ’47-S rosies, and a sterling St. Joseph medal that I thought was an SLQ in the hole. Wishful thinking, heh? I’ll take a big hunk of silver no matter if Lady Liberty or St. Joseph is stamped on it! Also got 3 ½ wheaties - the half wheat was my first deep target at a new spot within a park I’ve hunted before. This spot has an incredible carpet of shallow targets, both high and low conductors, which makes it challenging to listen for the deep signals, and I almost gave up on it to seek out peace and quiet. But once I pulled the half wheat out, I knew my ears were calibrated. Boy, did it sound good in the ground, a million miles away, screaming a high-pitched HEEEELLLP MEEE! Just like the little guy in the spider’s web at the end of the movie THE FLY. Ooooh, gives me shivers. The noisy spot, no bigger than an RV, gave up 2 more wheats which were quickly followed by 2 silver rosies - glad I toughed it out. As usual, I had a line of kids following me, asking questions. They get so close on either side of you, it forces you to swing the coil in short strokes, which seems to help the F75 tune in better to the deep targets. The kids had fun watching me dig and they all want a machine. One wonders what the next generation of MDers will yearn for in the turf…
PS – My 10 ½ year old girl started playing league basketball in the spring. There weren’t enough girls her age to create more than one team, so they asked the parents and kids how we felt about playing against the boys. Their coach is amazing and brought the girls from the point of being unable to dribble beyond half court without the boys stealing the ball to actually winning 2 games, including their opening-round playoff! My girl’s skill level continues to improve - she beat me in 1-on-1 last week and 7 out of 8 games of “HORSE”. I don’t let her win (I’ll block her shots to force her to arc the ball) and I’m a decent shot. She’s developed a little fadeaway bank shot, which I hope gets her into Duke someday. Her latest thing is closing her eyes on foul shots - yikes. If ya got kids, spend time with ‘em. – Jim
