Hi,

I'd like to buy a detector in the 1,500-2,000$ range and looking for suggestions on the brand and model. I'll use it primarily for searching old homesites for coins and relics. Also will use it to try and find gold and maybe on the beach. So I guess I need something as versitile as possible. Also, there's a lot of iron ore rock in the area where I live- not sure if that will matter in making my selection.

All suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Dont shoot for the moon on your first machine. You have a tough row to hoe just learnin tectin. Learnin tectin is like learnin to drive a car. Nobody buys a brand new car if they dont know how to drive.

I had my best early luck detecting with Tesoro detectors. Found my best silver coin, best gold jewelery and best relic ever all with a Tesoro. I still find good stuff with other machines. But that year with my Bandito think it was called is still my most outstanding one in my memory!

Good luck detecting! CARM

Just a few things to keep in mind....

There is no detector on the market that will "tell" you what's in the hole before you dig..no matter how much you spend...If you buy a model that costs less (Ace 250,350 or Minelabe 305) they may work better for you as there are not that many "bells and whistles" and are easier to operate and understand....I would not buy an expensive detector if you have never metal detected before....no matter how much you spend, you WILL DIG JUNK...and then you may dislike the hobby because all you find is junk, then you are stuck with a detector that cost you 2,000 bucks...and lets face it...you will not get all your money back if you sell on ebay.

But if you are serious about the hobby....and want to spend that much...I would look at a Minelabe E-Trac or Fisher F-75, or Garrett's AT PRO...all of these are excellent machines made by different companies.
Check out youtube and type some of the metal detectors in the search and watch video's and see which one you may like...... Good Luck.

I like my Garrett AT Pro ($600 retail) & Teknetics G2 ($749 retail). Both give a accurate ID on deep coins, both air test 10" on dime. You can read more on their websites, & here on metal detector brands & head to head comparisons. Both are easy to use, & have manual ground balance for difficult soils. Best wishes, George (MN)

Minelab safari all I have to say love mine.

If your looking to spend the money Minelab is what you want, but, in my opinion, there are a number of really good detectors out there that are just as good at half the price. you could look at White's FIsher and Tesoro, I think you would find a detector that is right for you in the $800-1200 range. It may even be an option took look for machine that will relic / Gold hunt and then get another machine specifically designed to hunt beaches.

Just a thought

Welcome to Tnet! In that price range, I'd get a Minelab E-trac or White's V3i if I'm not going into the water. A good used CTX3030 if I am. You won't have any regrets with performance with any of those three and the resale of them is still pretty good. There is a learning curve to them but there is to any metal detector to some extent. If you can read and understand a manual, you'll should have no problem. You won't be an expert overnight but after 100 hours or so of using one, you'll be as good as most.
