UPDATE: I hit the coin with a spoon like suggested and it totally broke up the "cookie" layering. It's definitely a Merc! I'll be slowing flaking away the outer layer. But, the spoon method works!!

Found this coin at the beach last month. It rings in at roughly a wheat cent but looks thicker, almost like a fatty IHC, but it's grey, like a silver coin. So I have no idea what it is. It looks like the "cookie" coating is fused with the coin, so it doesn't seem like it will easily flake off.

In one of the pics, it's next to a silver dime and it's clearly thicker than that. Thanks for any suggestions!

HH all.

Re: Suggestions on cleaning this coin?

I'm not saying to do it or that is right, but I would first try warm peroxide.

If that doesn't work I'd go with a low voltage electrolosis in short sessions.

That is the route I would go, too.

I'd clean it with a hammer...a good solid strike!

I'm sure there are better ways but I don't think you will find much under that crusty coating.

I have used a back of a spoon while holding the coin in your hand..
I would try that first, then maybe it's hammer time :laughing9: :laughing9:

If all else fails, as a last resort you can always heat it and dunk it in cold water.

Update and new pic in 1st post. It's a Merc! The spoon method definitely works - broke the layer like it was nothing. Will be chipping away tonight.

Thanks all!
