It appears to be some kind of Chinese character but difficult to tell since it is bent. If it was mine I would heat it up and place it between two pieces of wood and gently tap the wood together to flatten it.

Interesting artifact. Consider gently cleaning it, examine it with a magnifying glass for marks, and post pictures with a size reference of the front and back. What else did you find nearby? The octagon shape and detail has me thinking a brooch or pin.

I worked on it some. It could be a pin, has 2 little bumps on the back where something could have been attached.

Other items found near. The eagle I dates to 1840-50. Also a very slick King george, no date readable.

looks like a good old spot to hunt those are some nice coins I tried to figure out that piece no idea...
