Looks like it's going to be windy and rainy. I was thinking a woods hunt might help to take the edge off, but it's bound to be pretty muddy then too. Who knows what the ground is going to be like either, it doesn't seem like it would be thawed out from such a short warm up - but I guess it depends on the ground. Some of the Chicago parks have nice soft sandy dirty which might help the digging. Woods dirt should be full of leaf compost also making it soft though.

Who's all hunting and what's your game plan to make the best of this "warmer" day?

Brett,

Over here in the Chi the chances of rain are at about 30%, according to weather.com. That usually means random, isolated short rain throughout the day, or it could mean jack sh1t.

I am definitely getting out tomorrow, it should be fun, we're hitting some woods. Yes, it should be messy, but that's what makes it fun, eh? Game plan is to have plans B through Z figured out in the case that plan A isn't fruitful. This will be my first time out in a few weeks, and perhaps the last time for at least as long, so I hope I can pull an oldie or two or twenty.

Good luck on your hunt! Don't forget to post any and all finds!

Joe

Windy days in the woods can get you crowned by falling branches fellas. Be safe and good hunting!

Hey Brett,

I was out in the woods for a few hours today and it wasn't bad at all. . . considering it's winter.
Yes, the ground is soft & wet and a shovel is recommended. Most of the areas in the woods still have
a couple of inches of snow but when you're near the river in some places, there's no snow at all :)

Looks like I'm going for city hunting with my Dad...

I dug a plug in my backyard and it was easy to dig, not frozen at all really... but the dirt was sticking to my shovel like syrup! I ended up burying a '69D dime at a triple measured 8" (didn't want to sacrifice one of "my precious" silvers from this year in there just yet). The E-Trac was getting it repeatable easily and conductive numbers were pretty dead on. Ferrous numbers were hitting just lower than the FE12 line for sure (16/17) in coin mode, but when I opened it completely up the numbers were diving even further into the FE land... 20's approaching 30. I think it was all over because the ground was disturbed - this area of my yard was fairly quiet in all metal with a sensitivity of 18. I'm definitely impressed and can't wait to go get out there where silver should be.

Goio, McEtrak and SMAN dropped off the face of the earth... I guess they must be hitting the woods again today!

If it's gets nasty in the city, we might try to find you guys in the woods if that's alright.

The things we do for metal detecting! Are we nuts or what?

I dont know now what I am going to do Brett. We went out today and the open ground was like concrete here in NWI. It is suppose to rain in the morning now so I will just have to wait and see what tomorrow brings. I would like to get out one more time but it all depends on the weather. SMAN.

SMAN, I sent you three a PM describing where we will be. I don't know what the weather is going to do either, but I'd rather be there ready to dig in case the conditions are just right. If it totally sucks I was going to try an meet up with Twistidd and gang if they are cool with that.

The more the merrier Brett!

It's still a little iffy tomorrow, and the last I heard, we're not going to hit it until 9 or 10am to see how the weather settles in. We've got a few places in mind, but I guess it'll be up in the air until morning.

If you've got Twistidds or TF's number, give them a call around 10:00am. If you don't have their numbers, pm me with your's and I'll send you mine. If not, have a good time with that ETrac.

Well I think the hunt today went pretty well. I had a great time. We all got something good. GOIO of course got the ONLY silver coin found today. WTG!!! What was really cool was a family came by where we were hunting and their young son came up to me and asked me what I was looking for. I pulled out some coins and showed him. He smiled and they moved on. They came up to Greg and they were talking and I saw Greg give the kid his only silver for the day. The kid was all smiles. That was a cool thing to do bud. As far as hunting I ended up with 15 wheaties and a 1905 Indian. That was only my 4th for the year. Unfortunately, that looks like the last hunt for the year up here for me. I am headed to the Great State of TEXAS Friday. WOOHOO!!! I am taking my detectors and my wife is gonna tag along at least once. Hopefully we will pull some good stuff out that old part of Texas. My town has been there since the 1830s and Nacodoches has been there since the late 1700s so I am hoping to get lucky. SMAN...

Great hunt guys!!!

Yeah it was an awexome day. One of the best days this year for me in fact. My Dad killed it right after you guys left! Wait til he posts his story and pics. I'll try to post all my pics tomorrow morning. Gotta crash immediately.

Congrats on your 15 wheaties and "one little indian" SMAN! That place rocks. I'm glad you guys all made it out and it DIDN'T RAIN!!! hooray!
