Is it brass? It looks more to me like a small drawer handle.

I can make out the word patented but what are the letters after that?

From the location of the countersink I'd say it's a brace for some type of extendable leg. Two 1x2's would go through it and one would be fixed to the brace. Much like a surveyors extendable story pole. It would probably need more than one to work (so go find the other one). Hope I made sense.

The horse hame suggestion makes since to me since they seem to have an iron strap running down the length surrounded by wood. This would explain the "shoulders" and recessed mounting. It seems to have abrasion wear in the top inner corners. Thanks! Anyone else? I'm no horse tack expert although I should be based on my location.

You make sense. Seems like the sides wouldn't have those shoulders unless the bottom half was recessed into some sort of surface. I'm lost :)
