This happened in the spring of 2004:

Hi guys went on a short hunt with Jim Philly today. We were at a large 250 yr. old estate the river was high the last few days and now that its down it made a large cut into the enbankment by some very old steps so I wanted to check it out, it was a strange hunt but I found 1870's Indian head penny that broke apart in my hands, a 1875 shield nickle "a first" for me . and strange as this may seem a real wild turkey led me to a Diamond necklace! ask Jim. It was right were the the cut from the river receded if it rained 1 more day the river would have taken it. It was sticking half in and half out of the ground right at the edge of the embankment, if it wasnt for the Turkey I would have never seen it or found it, theres no detecting allowed at that particular spot, At first I thought it was costume jewelry until I started to clean it I realized the chain although small is very heavy and built strong , then as I cleaned of the Diamonds, one of them has hallmarks all I can tell so far is a lion, and an anchor, and a 14 in a square and a 9 in a shield. I wish I knew more about jewelry. if they are real diamonds which I very much doubt, there are 7 of them on the necklace.
I was told the 14 stands for Karats white gold, and the 9 in a shield is the year 1889 which it was made.

Here was Jim's response to my post:
I dont know. It was a wierd hunt.

This turkey, yes a live wild turkey came out of a feild and really took a liking to J.D. It walked around him and gobbled. Im staying as still as possible . Then the turkey just about points at the necklace on the ground with its beak!!! No lie, and J.D. picked it up. Too freaky.

Jim

what a day hh all

LOL....I dont know if JD is the one to hunt with....myself?, I am going to look for that turkey!!!! LOL ;)

Are you sure it's a necklace? It looks sort of like an old pocket watch chain.

hey Waco... a guy from the UK sent me this message...

What a beauty JD!!! I think you have a watch chain there, with Fobs. We call then Albert chains here in the UK. They were named after queen victoria's hubby Prince Albert....What do you think? Wow what a find J.D

Alan

I went back and feed the turkey and I had pictures of it at one time, I cant find them now :(

The anchor hallmark is for Birmingham, England. The date mark should be a letter, not a number. For example, the Birmingham date mark for 1889 would be a lower-case Old English o within an oval.

soory I meant to put "P" not 9......... I have had abourt 10 emails everyone of them say smething diff. about the necklace/watch thingy lol lol... I cant believe how many jewelry places can tell you nothing about jewelry... all I know for sure at this time is the diamonds are real 3 diff. stores tested them for me all said real... it was cool they have this little handheld device that shoots a light onto the diamond and they can tell if it real? or not..? jd

someone sent this explanation of a FOB:

OK, don't tell your wife that we told you this but fob originally meant a small pocket, especially a secret pocket. A watch carried in a small vest pocket (that's "waistcoat pocket" for Brits) was therefore called a fob watch and the chain attached to the fob watch was called a fob chain. Frequently the fob chain would have an ornament of some kind on the furthest end from the watch. Sometime in the late 19th century, the fob chain was assumed to be named after this ornament and the ornament became known as a fob (because it was on a fob chain). If that's not entirely clear we suggest reading it again... but take notes this time.

wow -- congrats -- was thinking this morning that if it is old the stones could very well be real -- I am guessing most of them are European cut damonds or mine cut. Would be very interresting to see what the appraisal is. Another amazing find -- stay out of my state!!

if you have a micrometer and give me the dimensions I can get you a CT weight ;D

Ok, some women are shoe hounds, I happen to be a jewelry hound. I have a necklace with a toggle closure just like yours. Because the loop has the decoration on it the toggle would close in the front and the diamonds would be on display. I have a watch fob made of black stones, it's a piece of mourning jewelry and I've seen other watch fobs. Yours looks way too long to be a fob. I wish I found that one! I'm at the southern most tip of Iowa, what area in Missouri are you hunting?
