I'm not so sure it's a wrench. Looks too crudely made for that purpose. Also, one side is flat and the other raised/rounded. Most wrenches are the same on both sides. I'm thinking it's a base for something or maybe a retainer.

it is rugged and well made , the underside handle part is ''hollow shaped '' and the wrench ends are tapered - semi wedge shaped . And the side ''hook '' things have me baffled .

Mojjax, you might want to check out some of the old fire hydrant wrenches.

I think it is an old offset wrench, a little more unusual than most but a wrench regardless. Here's a pic and a link to an old tool auction which includes some similar wrenches...

Can't get the link to the auction to work, but it's greatplanestrading.

I would gamble that rather than a wrench what you have is some kind of keeper that went between nuts and was screwed in with the screws engaging those little barbs to hold it in place and keep the nuts from backing off. But that's just a guess.

Methinks, some kind of special to one type engine tappet wrench of some kind. A tool made for a specific task is all I can come up with. :dontknow: If only we'd been happy with what we can just pick from a tree, we wouldn't have needed a special tool every time to satisfy are desires. Coming up with the right tool for the job goes back a long ways. The concept in designs are endless.:icon_scratch:

Looks like a tool to push and pull out a hot grating on a stove?
Pull out the grate with the hook and rotate the platter with the "U" shape end?

When it comes to tools, yours doesn't appear to be well made. From the photos, it looks cast instead of forged. Also the sides on the ends should be parallel and yours don't look like they are. The ends are thin and tapered making them weak for most heavy duty uses.

Maybe it was not meant to be used . Maybe it was on a sign , or a display piece ?
And , yes it does seem like it was cast .

Hi mojjax. Maybe the "hook" things are just that, made to hook or hang the wrench on a nail or peg. Thanks the post. C9

here is this from greatplanestrading.com

191. Two automotive valve tools: BUFFUM TOOL CO. (LOUISIANA, MO) valve spring compressor with pivoting head, missing the hook and length of chain that would have originally come with it, very good overall; and a malleable iron valve tool, very good. (Photo )
