Went back to the woods on Wednesday where I met up with a buddy of mine to do some digging. My friend pointed out a location on the side of a hill that used to have some kind of pen on it. I believe this location would have been active from early to mid 1800s till around 1920-30 when yards and farms fields were left to grow over and is now a wooded area. Anyhow, I found this odd "dangling jewelry piece" there and have no idea what it actually is. Any info would be appreciated!

Its a late 18th C - early 19th C Seal Fob - When they were more fashion than function. Hung off the watch chain.

That thing has a beautiful patina on it.. Shame ot does have a name or a figure on it..
Would love to have that in my collection. .Nice save.

Pretty darn cool, your so lucky the stone was still in it too!

Long time no see Perses. That is one of the most interesting objects posted here in many months. The fact it is unique, whole and obviously old makes me like it more than anything I can see up top ( with the exception of the paper cartridges! ).
Cru, nice job on the ID.

I love finding those!
Excellent find!

"Those" Must be nice.:)
Still it's on my most wanted list and I'd even take this type over the sought over personal seal, as this would look great in any display of finds, congrats on the beauty recovery.

That thing is awesome!
Topaz? Thats a huge looking stone!

Wow well that was a quick ID, and a great one at that! I appreciate your help. I assume the "stone" to be glass, correct?

Patina does look nice, just a tad brittle, you can see a few spots in the pictures where it came off. Shame its not silver or gold hahhaa, but a name would be amazing since this was found on old estate grounds of a very prominent man. If I was to find something with his name on it, and connect the find to him I would be on cloud 9 for years I think!

I couldnt believe the stone was in AND it wasnt flattened!

Hey buddy, glad to hear from ya! Thank you for the comment, and this is most definitely one of the best finds in my detecting "career". It was funny because that day I had maybe 2 hours to dig at most, I found an indian head and a few wheatback pennies when we decided to leave the woods, and as we were walking out my friend goes "Have you been over there yet? We found old silver and fence posts for a pen". All I had at the spot was 20 minutes at most, the sun goes down so quickly this time of the year!

Had no idea that it was such a desired find, this makes me see the fob in new light!

I am not sure what stone that is, it has a yellow tint to it, but frankly I think its just glass.

Yes, glass or paste

That is sweeeet. I love finding older stuff like that, I've gotten a couple of pins/brooches that look to be about the same metal. Nice and intricate. Congrats!
