Strange texture on this artifact

As you can see... one side rather smooth... the other side like course sandpaper! :dontknow:
I found this a couple of weeks ago and forgot that I did not put it up here! This was found in the same area of our dirt pile that we have been working the the last several weeks, only this artifact actually came out of the side wall of the normal layer of dirt after the dozer scrapped the top soil into a pile for landscaping.
As with most of the finds... they seem to be rather crude... but this one seems to be smoother on the one side. Maybe a different material???
MY assumption is it was in a camp fire and overheated and the smooth surface popped off and left this course surface. :dontknow:
This may be common to you all... but.... all this is new to us.
What do you all think?
