I've been detecting an old stone house for over a year, off and on, with little luck on anything valuable, but some interesting artifacts, that I give the new owner for his wall and showcase. I once found a 6 foot two-man saw, that I thought I was about to dig up a pipeline.

Yesterday he was building a water channel, and I was helping him, and out pops this strange shape spoon, It is cast brass or bronze. I have not cleaned it yet..It is 5 inches long. I have detected this spot no less than three times without a decent signal. So I was surprised it was in my hand.. It came out just as the pics show. I see no markings or design at all.

Now, what was this spoon used for?.....Sugar, salt.....Is it very old?

Re: STRANGE SPOON & OTHER OLD UTENSILS

I have added these 3 pictures of other utensils/tools found out this house. These are all cleaned, and found within the last 2 months. Most were found in cellar rooms with dirt floors.

The oval shaped tool has me stumped for what it was used for. It is iron circa 1800-1850.... The fancy cheese grater is silver plated, and has a bell in its handle that "sings" when shaken, circa 1900(?)....The three forks are different designs, with very fine tines, and probably circa 1800...I assume the hole in the knife blade was for hanging, it is hand forged.

I also think it is for flipping pancakes or something.

looks more like a sputula to me than a spoon...

Not sure if the picture shows it clearly, but the business end pf the "spoon" flips up, and is slightly concave inside; so not a spatula, which would be flatter, not to mention the 1" x 1.25" size, or very small pancakes..

My wife suggests it is a bon bon spoon, that polite company used for taking small candies from a bowl, to place them in your hand..... No Double Dipping Scenarios.

The small oval wrought iron tool in the next set of pictures, is still a mystery...

I would say ice cream dipper

Yes..That makes sense..Like those little spoons for tasting a sample at an ice cream shop.

I think you hit it!......Thanks.

Looks like a pharmaceutical device for flat spooning?

Pretty sure its a small paddle for a butter bowl, butter was churned then placed in a wooden bowl, there it would have a small paddle placed in it to dip out the desired amount. Nice find
