Hmmmmmmm..............
There was a 56-56 Spencer Rifle. There was a TeatFire Cartridge see below.

TEATFIRE CARTRIDGE - Cartridges designed for use in front-loading revolvers (Williamson Patent #41,183, 1-051864) as a circumvention of the Rollin White patent owned by Smith and Wesson. They are characterized by a small round or flat teat in the base containing the fulminate and are known in.32 and.45 caliber.

Definition for "teatfire cartridge" : A metallic case cartridge developed in 1864 by inventor D. Williams. The copper case had a flared opening at one end and either a round or flat small teat on the other. The teat contained the priming charge, followed by the main powder charge. On top of the main charge was the bullet, crimp into position beneath the edge of the flared case mouth.

Better Macro pics would help......interesting find.

That's what it sounds like. (the Teatfire) Could be a 32, it's hard to tell without one for comparison. We've been digging a lot of casings at this site, 45-70's mainly, but some other strange, (to me) casings. Plus a nice Gun Oil bottle, that I'll post soon. Here's a hopefully better pic. Thanks for the usual light speed identify,
Carl
