I found this rock with my medal detector . It is unusually heavy for its size . A magnet sticks to it . one side looks like it was polished .I'm hoping it's a meteorite . If it is , are they worth anything ??

Not another strange rock post! Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!! LOL just kidding! In my opinion you have a nickel-iron meteorite. I recommend you take it to a museum or university and have it authenticated. some of those are worth more per ounce than gold! HH omnicognic 8)

WOW that is a really cool rock. The way it wrapped around the material on the inside. That is real Specimen Quality.(am I allowed to say Specimen?)Let us know what you find out. HH

Well this may be the first meteorite posted on this forum. Wash out the red dirt clay- Can you see some "thumbprints" or regmaglypts.

I was just curious if you found it cut and polished or did you do it yourself? If you found it cut, that would add more to the mystery. Please keep us informed and if is a metoerite, you have quite a find!

I think it is slag. I have lots of it. I would like to show you but I do not know how to post pictures on this sight.

To Steeler Fan - Yes , I think that it must of been lost by someone who had it before because that smooth spot looks too much like it was done '' by a human '' It was only about 2'' deep , And I found it just beyond the grounds of an old high school near the athletic feild . so I am thinking that maybe a student or teacher lost it a few years back . The school was built around 1802 so it has alot of history . My metal detector is not a very good one , but I have found several mercury dimes and a few wheat pennies along with tons of crap #*~%
Thanks

Why don't you streak it on the back of your toilet (or any porcelein object such as a streak plate). Magnetite will streak gray. hematite will streak red. Meteorites will commonly not streak as they are very hard as they are usually composed of silicates and metal.

I scratched it on the non-glazed under side of the tank lid and it made a blackish / gray line , so I guess it is just magnetite . I was hoping it was from another planet , oh well . Thanks for the learning experience Bakergeol !

mojjax, I have seen a whole bunch of strange rock "could this be a meteorite?" posts. I also have a lot of personal experience with this particular subject. You shouldn't dismiss this one so easily. A skeptic I am, but this one strikes me as being much more convincing than any of the others and for the value that it may holde it's worth getting a professional opinion! Post us an update! omnicognic 8)

Do you know why that magnetite specimen was cut and polished? Because someone else thought it was a meterorite too. When you cut an iron meterorite then polish and then etch with? nitric acid it will have a Widmanstatten pattern. Some polished and etched meteorites are shown below.

I must say its awefully large to be slag I used to weld in Highschool and never had any pieces of slag that size, and as far as that metal pattern of meteorites, I dont know if all of them or just a few have that type of pattern ,also ive never seen slag wrap around other material, slag is garbage metal burned off while welding after the welds done you just chip it off , it doesnt seem to have metal properties more like carbon properties, and it chips and breaks easily, does not bend like metal, and slag really doesnt melt, its like carbon or hard charcoal ,,so i find it hard to believe it could wrap around something like that, its definately an oddity and i would guess against the slag theory, I think it may be a meteorite, call your local planetarium they may know where it can be looked at, Tell us what it is when you find out, tammahawk ;D ;D ;D

I too think it is a meteorite. I have found 3 over the years, I have tryed to sell them everywhere and no one even offers on them all that hoopla about the value is just so the professionals from schools can get more money to run around on. I can show them a place where they can find them without a metal detector, no it is not easy but is done all the time.

I wouldn't dismiss platnium yet. True platnium streaks steel gra but if it has impurities mixed in you'll get an off streak. I now the purists say no but it happens to me all the time.Platnium alloys with nickel most of the time and nickel will give a blackish streak. I"M Looking at a picture of a platnium nugget and they look identical. I,m not an expert but I wouldn't rule it out. I've seen a lot of manganese, magnetite and some hematite. It just looks a little diffferent to me.

another thing if it were steal I highly dought it would look so clean without corrosion unless you saw it falling and got out your catchers mit hehe lol, it would have rusted and it shows no oxidation at all, also if it is platnum yowsa! that would be worth some dough ,pennies from heaven!,tammahawk ;D
