It looks a great deal like an ammonite cross section. That might also explain why the lighter mineral is raised. The hollow interior cavities of ammonites tended to form crystals, while the shells were replaced with less uniform minerals. The less dense mineral would have been worn away by water action quicker than the harder crystalline interior leaving raised shapes.

I agree with paleomaxx that it's a fossil, likely ammonite. looks like you can see other fossils in the rock as well. very cool find!

It's a good thing I never find fossils because to me it is shaped more like a trilobite. I have much to learn.

But it sure looks like some kind of symbols even though ... right ? I even see what looks like a duck or goose head with a different body ... does anyone have pictures of fossels that match these ? Just courious .... Woodstock

Sure looks human worked to me, I've never seen anything like it in nature.

That sure is an interesting find. It is not an ammonite fossil.

A lizard in the bottom maybe? I would think only a machine could carve out such details in rock. IDK. But, I do think it's an amazing piece whatever it is.

Don't know much about fossils but this looks like one, the pattern is repeating and also fading as you look down. Weird find for sure.

I finally found some photos of ammonite fragments that illustrate my thought process on this find. Definitely not conclusive, but you can see some of the intricate curving patterns that the shells formed; almost like puzzle pieces. Most ammonites are sectioned like in the third photo for display, but if the ammonite was split perpendicular to that plane towards the end of the whorl, it might have formed that pattern that's only symmetric from right to left and not top to bottom.
