Looks like someone cut down a quarter to dime size- must have added the ridges- pretty cool!

A pic of the edge, if possible....
No US coins that small with a receded edge, not when Washingtons were being minted...
Thinking post mint damage, someone fooling around....

If it were exactly dime sized I might say someone mistakenly stamped a quarter on a dime blank but since it's smaller I'm going to say post mint damage also. Interesting.

found it in a coinstar return slot

Cool find! Someone had a bit of time on their hands!

Yep, I'd say some yahoo was trying to take $0.25 and turn it into much more. Is amazing the lengths people will go to cheat others. If you can't make it through life honestly, then I have no soft feelings. Whomever did that deserves to be caught and charged for attempted fraud. If they've done this much work once, they'll do it more. Count on it!

I wouldn't go that far.... Probably a kid goofing off with Dads tools...
The fact that it ended up in a coinstar, as opposed to an eBay wonder, leads me to believe this is nothing more than shenanigans.
I got a handful of coins altered in one way or another....

Looks like a punch press that makes holes in thick metal did that

the us mints coins for other countries is it silver or clad whatever it is the reeding is way to consistent to be hand made therefore i believe it to be a mint error if so a quart on a dime planchet in silver or clad is one of the most sought after errors other than double dies it would have to be authenticated by a third party grading service but worth some major money good luck i m aa coin guy going on 50 years

I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree. I don't believe this coin was "minted" on the wrong planchet, but rather that it started its life as a full-sized quarter.

I think someone put it in a dehydrator with their beef jerky run. ::ducks::
