Strange Item- Medal? Hatpin? Please help

Hello Forum,

I found this item in a wooded area that was used by military, hunters fur traders etc. for many years. I found many bullets, and this strange item. The two small hooks on the back side made me wonder if this was part of a pin / medal. Any ideas?

Very light weight, and thin. If it were a window latch I would think it would need to be heavy, and durable.

I would agree. my best guess is that those tabs bent over ant retained the cover. The object it covered, maybe wood rotted away leaving this object. The $10,000 question is what did it belong to?

those tiny teeth crimp things make me think leather? but then is that a screw hole

I thought over wood too flag Pole Holder ? Probably Not.

But am also thinking a cover the screws on a Square Base and the ends just cover something mechanical.

Those hooks make me think of a metal clip from an Ace bandage. But the object itself appears to be decorative.

Have not chimed in on a what is it in awhile... so...

I agree... part or all of a strap decoration.

The little folding "arms" / "tabs" held this item on something like a small strap... could have been a decoration from a toy cowboy belt or a toy Indian head dress or the likes as well IMO.

The hole in the center would have secured another piece... maybe an ornamental piece.
