I found this strange looking pewter piece about 150 yards from the recent musketball "cache" I recovered. Along with it I found several pieces of broken pewter spoon handles, two brass thimbles a brass handled folding pocket knife and a 1865 Indian Cent strangely enough, no brass buttons. It could be unrelated to the other items as the place has seen overlapping times of occupation including fur trade. It measures 1.97 inches across and has a rectangular hole through the raised part on the back. There may have been some design on the front but hard to tell now. The front is not flat but it is convex.

At first I thought maybe some sort of bridle rosette or some kind of sliding bolo type device but I am not sure so was looking for some ideas. Thanks guys.

Large button ? just a guess.. I am not a button guy.

But this piece seems familiar.

I’d say it’s horse related

What about a collar button for a cape/cloak?

could it be a hem weight or curtain weight

Pewter was used to make coffee pots etc. so maybe it is a lid. The semi-circle along the rim of the second photo looks uniformly round where the coffee would pour out. For some reason it doesn't look as round in the first photo.

It is near perfectly round and the front of it is convex. Thanks for the ideas.

Thanks for all the guesses so far guys! I'm just still stumped as to what it is for sure. It could have been used for a button but it is bigger around than the biggest dandy button I have ever dug. I'm still leaning toward bridle rosette

I feel like we have a winner here. I can see this as a clock pendulum. Thanks for your input!

Could be the lead backing to a rosette?

It's definitely not lead it is harder material. The manner of attachment isn't really consistent with what I have seen with rosettes so that lead me to rule it out.
The rectangular slot in the back could be used with a slim metal bar so that made me lean toward the pendulum idea. Thanks for the suggestion though.

A lot of the old Clock Pendulums were wood and the weight was pressure fit with and adjuster screw on the bottom so it would slide up or down to set the rate of the pendulum.
