I sent some pictures of the strange hammered silver coin, I posted awhile back to an expert. This is the info he kindly emailed me. , "As you say, this is a Henry III long cross penny of class 5b or 5c which has been altered, reducing its diameter and losing the legends completely. The weight of a full penny should be around 1.2 grams so if it still weighs something near that then it has probably been hammered around the edge; if much lighter then clipped or maybe a combination of both things. It is possible that this was done to make a crude pilgrim's token to display the cross on the reverse. Pennies in this period are sometimes seen with the reverse gilded for such use" .
If you look at the bottom centre of the first picture, you can still see the kings portrait. I found this coin on what was once a medieval market site. Wonder if these altered coins were being sold there. The coin dates 1247-72. Robert.
