Hello,

I dug this little coin/token thing today, and have no clue what it could be from.

I forgot to include an object for a size comparison, so I measured it instead. It is 22.5 mm in diameter, or just a smudge smaller than a quarter. It is also much much thinner than any circulation coin I have ever seen, measuring .7mm in thickness. (A quarter is 1.7mm thick)

I did not cut it, it was dug as you see it.

I can make out most of the words on the front. On the rim it reads: "COLONIE OF CAYENNE". In the middle I can make out a 2(it is partially chopped, this detail is hard to see in the photo), under that is a word that I cannot make out, and below that appears the be the date 178?. There is writing on the back, but I do not want to overclean, and cannot make out any of it.

Any idea what this could be? I am at a loss, might try a google search. I know there are many knowledgeable people on the boards, so I am hoping one of you has seen something like this before.

Thank you very much for your help,
Anthony

Here's my 2 cents for what it's worth...

Picture this, the round you have there is the pour spout from the top of a spice can, when they opened it, they stuck the tip of a knife blade into the round to pull it out. Seen alot of this type of thing in AZ at the miner's camps (stuff being opened with knives, that is).

Call it solved, this is indeed a 1789 2 Sous coin from a French Colony in South America. Now the question is, how the heck did it wind up in a field in Va Beach?!?

COLONIE DE CAYENNE, or Colony of Cayenne. Not sure where it is exactly, but what I read said South America.
