Strange Brass Item from Plantation Site in Louisiana

I found this brass item at an old plantation home site in Louisiana.
Civil War soldiers camped here as well.
Any guesses? Thanks for any help or ideas as to what this is or could have gone to.

Yes, it is indeed a cartridge holder. In fact, it's a clip to a semi-automatic pistol. I just got a positive I.D. on it. It's 20th century, but I'll take it.....
