Found this coin on a field in England last week, didn't even know it was a coin until I was cleaning up the finds today.
Or at least I think its a coin.....

Specs -
Mass : 1.76g
Dimensions : 19mm (The chips appears to be broken off during production, color is continuous)
Color: a deep black patina, very hard to make a photo....
Material: it is a metal, normal weight. There is no place on the coin where I can see what sort of metal is under the patina, so deep is the patina.

Any ideas anyone?

Hi Shaun, yes I found it on that dense/ heavy/ sticky/ gummy/ 'hard as a rock when dry'/ clay soil...soil????, at the place the prof and I were staying. I remember it because, just like the fields by the Cru, I found a bunch of buttons, and I remember saying to myself a funny black button, but at least one with a little pattern on it; better than all the plain ones. I guess I should take my reading glasses with me, but just like many I always think I don't need them!

But before this find never really had seen one, and this one is real funny, completly BLACK as the night is. I talked last night with one of my searching buddies and he had also found one a time ago, but that one looked just like a normal coin.

DOES anyone know, are the Potins brons/copper/silver??? And have any of you every found a coin with real BLACK patina? (I had not).

These coins are traditionally known as potins, from the French term for a bronze alloy with a high (above 25%) tin content; cast bronze is perhaps a better description, since their tin content is usually not that high.
