Detector(s) used
White's 6000 Di/Pro, E-Trac
ok, so how behind the times am i. im coming to ya straight outa 1987 with my good old whites 6000 Di Pro. (not sl or plus, etc.)

am i a dinosaur, or just "old-school", or can my detector still hold its own? how does it compare with todays modern detectors.

what is whites top-of-the-line coinshooter nowadays? what is the modern equivalent of my detector? it was once considered "the best". but times change. (this whites detector has been so good to me i wouldnt really consider any other brand)

i know the depth limits of my detector, and i know that there must have been some really deep coins that i have missed. on the other hand im not sure if id want to dig a 12" hole? ;D

As long as it works , and works for you , it will hold its own. :) This is/was one of the most popular detectors made. Whites probably sold more 6000 series detectors than any other over the years. 8)

Yes I still have my series 3 in my closet. At that time interval my Metal detecting club was composed of about 2/3 Whites users. That was pre-minelab of course. I understand your viewpoint about Whites as I also had it over 20 years ago myself.

We haven't seen incredible leaps in technology in the last 20 years so the 6000 is still a useable machine. What has changed in technology is tone Id, better separation around trash and yes depth. My series 3 can't hold a candle to my X-5 in the depth department. My x-5 also weights a scant 2 lbs which is easy on the arms.

Will the newest technology translate into better finds. Can't really agree with that as my best, awe inspiring finds came with a BFO. As always knowing your machine, research, having the correct frame of mind and just being lucky enough to put the coil over a good target always ranks on the top of the list.

Should you upgrade to a current model such as a MXT or a DFX. Well if you become addicted again in this hobby you will.

good luck

Moonshine I hunt with 2 older gentleman that both use that machine and I hate to admit it but they out-hunt me not everytime but quite often. I think it's knowing what the detector is telling you.
Good Luck

First off, that old 6000 is no slouch. If you know the machine well you can compete surprisingly well with those using newer machines. You will also out detect many with newer detectors that haven't learned their machines well enough. Regardless of which detector is used, there is an extended period of getting to understand the language of your detector.
White's present top of the line is the DFX. There are more and more rumors lately that White's is close to releasing a new top of the line model. The most popular coinshooter used locally is the White's MXT. Less bells and whistles to worry about but a really great performer. As a bonus it will also perform very well as a gold machine.
White's newest comparable model to the 6000 Di PRO is the XL PRO. It retains most of the features you are used to while having some functional improvements in the electronics. The biggest improvement is in weight and balance. The XL PRO is more than a pound lighter than my old 6000 Di/PRO SL.

thank you all for the replies! i understand what you all are saying, it makes a lot of sense. thanks for updating me a bit.
