I went out with a friend to his favorite mid 1800's farm site. This farm has Native American mounds, early 1800's settler history, and is now a cattle and sheep farm. Sheep bones are strewn around the rocky ledges and pastures. (Dang coyotes!) Over the decades, locals have come here to hunt arrowheads and such. My buddy has been detecting the area around the farmhouse for about five years, and found hundreds of 1800's items, including Civil War uniform buttons and adornments.
Yesterday, I came home with some relics. Buttons included a "JP Smith & Sons-Dundee" and "Finck's Detroit" along with an eyeball find of a porcelain or glass button. Also found a collar stud with remnants of gilt still on it. Buckles included a brass oval shoe (?) buckle, a square filigreed Victorian sash buckle, and an iron tack buckle. Another favorite eyeball find for me was the large Native American chopper/axe/hoe/scraper blade. Other widgets rounded out the hunt. Thanks for looking. Cheers to all, Sub
