I found this stone near the riverbank, submerged here in Maine. The river has had several 1750ish forts built below and above where I found it. It is about 8 inches long and 6 inches wide and two inches thick and well worn. I believe the number is 7759 or 775y.

All I can think is maybe a property pin or part of a buildings?

Thank you for any help!

It could say 1759, the date one of the forts was built?

It could of been apart of the fort imbedded in the exterior wall, or in a stone pathway/road bed.

Maybe was a grave marker, or maybe it began as a grave stone but was never completed.

I did some light cleaning and it appears to read 775 y.......the Y looks like a nine without the top connecting it. Perhaps 775 yards?

I see 1759 and no Y759 , the small chunk that seems to make it a Y follows the 7's angle . It's to small to be gravestone marker and the date wouldn't be in that area if it was . I believe it's Fort related . Woodstock

That's definitely a "9" and not a "Y". Probably 1759; I agree that it could be related to the fort.

The last digit maybe could of been a 9 at some point, I agree the first digit does now look to be a 7, it could still be a date...7/7/59....or maybe you're right and it does stand for 775 yards, maybe it was a range marker for musket practice, but that would of been a hell of a shot for the averge person with a 1750s musket, maybe a young Daniel Boone was there visiting and showing off his shooting skills!!

It's driving me nuts really....I guess things like that do from time to time. My guess is that it is fort related and may return the stone to the town historical society. I love all the conjecture and potential guesses so far.....I appreciate it!

I would hunt that area soon.

7759. I don't think the font looks that old. Just my opinion though

I have seen a lot of gravestones that look like that. Just a number there is an old insane asylum graveyard near where I grew up with it looked very similar
