I found this in my yard in Middle Tennessee (Nashville). I've assumed it's some type of early tool but not sure what. Right now it's a good paperweight. Can anyone help with a definitive answer as to what it is and is there any way to date the object.

I agree that I thought it was an axe head. However, the "cutting edge" is so rounded it wouldn't even cut butter; just mash it. I was thinking it could have been a type of weapon. Any thoughts?

winner --give the man a cigar!!!----yep you got a stone ax head --a very nice one too by the way.Ivan

Very nice. Me and some guys i hunt with have found a few of them, but nothing nearly that complete or nice. Great find..but it that was MY front yard, i woudl have a tiller on that thing first thing in the moring...followed by a garden hose and a screen!

Most full groove axes of that size sell for at least $150. Could be anywhere from a couple hundred to a few thousand years old. Nice find.

Yep, full grooved stone indian axe. A good looking one too. They were prominent during the Archaic period which spanded approx 8000-1000 bc. Value wise, IMO $100-$350. I have a field that produces those axes by the dozens. I have some pictures of them in the American Indian Artifact threads if anyone is interested here are some of the links to some of them.
Some of my axes from the field.
