stone hammer? Found in North Dakota

I found this Stone about 20 years ago in North Dakota (when i was about 12 years old). My uncle took me out to look for rocks for my fish aquarium and this is one that I found. I have no idea if this is natural or if it was once used as a tool or hammer by Indians of the area from the past . I just pulled it out of my stuff i had packed away and have always wondered if it is more then just a rock. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking!



Hope these 2 pics help a little more. i thought the way the lines in the front and back of the stone lined up ment that it was on a V handle but thats why i am here to find out.

Stone. But probably very interesting to a 12 year old. Sorta interesting now. How it was formed or why, who knows?

A few more detailed photos would help to confirm one way or the other, but it sure appears to be "Natural," or what I like to call "Leaverite." It is an interesting piece though.

wonder if it could have been a blade sharpener due to the lines cut into the stone

When I was a kid we would search the stream beds for a rock shaped similar to yours. If you hold them by two fingers and your thumb in the middle and throw it sidearm , it will make a humming sound. We called them humming stones(what else?). And some of the guys even drilled a hole in one end and tied it to a string. If you would spin it round and round over your head it would also make the humming sound and you didn't have to go and look for it. Well, what can I say? It was easy to entertain a 9 year old back in the "old days". Monty

Monty: not that I ever had one, but are you talking about a bull roarer? The ones I have heard about or seen are wood. They made them out of stone?? You must be a bit older than I am. Stone age? For sure, I have never used one, thrown one, or carried on with one in any way, shape or form. Roarers, that is.
