From the pictures it looks to be Mississippian in age and made from pottery. Imo

It is way to heavy to be made of pottery, It is very heavy for the size. It was found just north of Cookeville TN, there was nothing else in that area, we went back and dug some of the rows up by hand and there was nothing else. There are a couple of pictures posted on the site Archaeology of Portable Rock Art that are similar to this one. I have been looking for several days and have not found anything like it.

I think it was I.D.'d in the other post 1929 hood ornament...

magnet stick to it?

I would be interested in the answer to the magnet question posed by lairmo. Could it be a finials which sat on the top of a civil war flag pole? Brass or some other non-magnetic metal? Something like this brass civil war era finial? Here is another similar.

The field gate was too small you indicate in the original post.
Thinking along the lines of a civil war era finial, if this was a camp they needed drinking and bathing water.
What about a water source? Is one near?

Comparing it to items found on Portable Art website is a negative, portable art are natural rocks and someone's over active imagination. Stick a magnet on it and see if it sticks.

Experienced artifact hunters will agree completely with this accessment of the Portable Rock Art site. Don't waste your time there.

There is no creek or other water except the water line from the house to the barn.

That just doesn't look like stone to me JMO. It could be what I call pot iron which was just a low grade of metal. 1 thing that caught my eye is that it has what looks like 5 toes for each foot, it may be just the way the photo looks to me, but I have never seen a bird effigy with 5 toes and it may not mean anything. It's a cool find but JMO I don't think it is Native American made. JMO

By far the most interesting aspect of Portable Rock Art are the negative reactions even the mention of it elicits. If you want something to go away you would be better off feigning indifference.

We have had people here trying to push the portable art here. People want to post it or discuss it this isn't the forum for it, this forum is for actual Native American Indian artifacts, they can discuss it on our Geofact forum.

Good idea. My posts all seem to end up there anyways.:whip2::protest::protest::protest:

Indian Steve already ID'd this for you. Apparently not what you wanted to hear, so I guess it's whatever you want it to be. Have a nice day.

What artifact collector could possibly take it seriously? You can find anything on the internet, and that includes people's personal delusions. It's a very democratic venue after all, and no lack of delusional thinking.

Of course mere mention of the Portable Rock Art site elicits negative reactions. About all it's worth is to show people what effigies are not. I suppose that's education to a very limited degree, except the author of that page does not interpret them correctly at all. Better to see genuine effigies, rather then indulge in the creations of someone who clearly has no idea what he's talking about. Life is too short.

Nah, by now, that site has come up way too often. Just pull the bandage off, and get it over with, why waste time?

Have you tried a magnet on it yet. It looks an alful lot like what Steve said.

It definitely is what's left of an old Model A quail hood ornament. And it is most likely made out of potmetal and may not react to a magnet. The chrome has been eaten off by time and the acids in the ground.

I wasn’t trying to vouch for any particular site, just the subject in general. I don’t see what is
claimed to be represented in most of the rocks either, I have just
found enough myself to understand the ambiguity is intentional.
