So my friend and I like to check out old cemeteries and the other night we came across these stone plots. There is nothing engraved on them at all. She thinks they could be Indian. I wonder if any of you have any idea...Sorry about the side ways pictures. Any help is greatly appreciated

I doubt Native American.

If they are outside the cemetery proper it could be suicides (they were not to be buried on hallowed ground) and the slabs hearken back to an older practice. Witches and murderers and the otherwise damned/excommunicated were burned and the ashes placed beneath a heavy rock - old Celtic practice; or just buried cheaply. It's also employed in places prone to flooding before burial vaults were common. No fun having the dead bob up when the ground gets saturated.

Something like into the 19th century those hung for murder could not be interred in the soil in England. They were gibboted or used for medical specimens/dissections at colleges - cool trivia.

Well I'm going to rule out NATIVE AMERICANS, India is probably pretty far from there.. I would guess it's a grave site for slaves.. But then again they probably wouldn't have marked those graves at all

the graves closest are slave grave sites. They weren't marked

Being your from Missouri I can only think that's maybe where you found these. Could be they're graves of slaves, as Rean.c has suggested. Hope your not thinking there's any treasure in those. Blondie's the only one who knows the name on the grave marker where the golds buried there Tuco. Those graves are unmarked.... :laughing7:

Very cool info Charlie P. We live in the Caney Mountains, almost at the AR border, and this cemetery was in the hills. These are in the cemetery, but in the far back. There are some witch tales in these parts. Who knows. Interesting stuff. Thank you.

Stillborn babies were, too once buried in unmarked graves or outside the cemetary walls, since they were not baptised...
