I found this bead laying in a washout in a field that I surface hunt in for points. Most points found in this field are archaic with some woodland as well. It is obviously made of stone. Can anyone tell the type of material it is made of? I've never seen any raw material like this in my area. There may be but, I just haven't seen it. Any thoughts are welcomed.

SWEET FIND! I don't know GA. Real well but the ones here in FLA. Are often made of hard sandstone. Are you positive its not lead with alot of patina?

I only say that because I thought the same thing when I found this.

That is a very nice find, Congratulations! At first it looked like one of those tubed ''lead'' fishing-net weights, but on closer inspection I see that it is made from stone. Again, that is a cool find. :icon_thumright:

It's not very heavy for it's size but since you asked about it possibly being made of lead, I took it back out the display case and passed under my metal detector and it is not any type of metal. There is drilling marks on the inside but I cannot get a satisfactory picture of the inside.

Thanks for the info. That's an awesome find!! I will check back to see if you figure out the material.

Nice bead, I havent found one yet myself.

I was thinking the same thing unclemac. It looks like Soapstone/Pipestone to me as well.

It could be Caddo related.

Very nice find!!

Nice drilled stone bead.w-rptb23ABC.jpg
I would be sifting some for more they are a scarce type. What do you think?

beads often, not always, but often, indicate a burial wash out...just so you know....

The wash out was not that particularly deep & I did not see any evidence of a burial. The area is known for points and tools. It being a plowed field means it may have been moved around somewhat by cultivation and erosion.

Another killer I haven't seen. I have to get over to see your stuff soon. Enjoyed you coming by to see my collection today!

Nice bead, I don't think Pipestone though, I am only 23 miles from the quarry at Pipestone Mn., and I have never seen light flecks to that degree in any I have ever seen.
