Stone Ball

Hello, I do most of my posting on the Today's Finds Page. I do spend some time hunting Indian artifacts, arrowheads, mostly in plowed fields. This however was an accidental dig going after a metal object in a field near a stream by where I live. It appears to be something like marble rock. The nearest marble as far as I know is about 100 miles east of here. About 1&1/2 inches in diameter, close to but not perfectly round and polished. When they were putting in our local sewer plant many years back about a quarter mile down stream I heard there were quite a few artifacts found. I have never seen anything like it, other than some clay marbles that were accidentally digs while metal detecting. This however is definitely stone. Would this be sometype of artifact and if it is my guess would be for a game ? The pictures are from different angles, sides of the ball.

It looks like a game ball (I've heard them called pecking stones also) I've got several like it but yours looks polished.

It looks like a Deburring Stone to me used to take the rough edges off of metal parts.

SRV is right i believe. The were used to polish industrial metal parts. I have seen them show up in surface found collections before.

i am pretty sure its a indian Marble .
i got a few myself that was found in a indian camp,with other artifacts.

Not sure. I find stone marbles on sites as well. They do make them for tumbling in industrial applications as well. I read the old post link the marble man posted.

Being from a town that has been mining copper silver and gold since the 1860's, I find those all the time here. When new, they have a rib around the circumference of them that gets worn down and can give it an "oblong" look. Just like these..... Many times made of ceramic because it is a tough stone-like material that lasts for multiple uses.

It's modern. I saw a 5 gallon bucket full of them at an antique store once. They had some industrial use.
