Your item appears to be a "celt". These can be many sizes, of many stone types, and had many uses. Some were used hafted and some weren't. Size reference in photos helps. I have little ones barely an inch long and larger ones up to 7" long. Yours sadly appears to have a badly chipped cutting edge. Celts can be found on all continents except Antarctica and were used by most paleo cultures. Cool find in a box of "stuff"!

Called a celt, used like an axe, Celt is usually wedge, it fits into handle with hole in it and the more it is used the tighter it becomes.

Thank you! This one is about 4.4" long.
Paleo cultures, so what time frame are we looking at?

On the east coast here, the celts were considered to have been made in the woodland indian period. That's the last one before Columbus. The 3/4 groove ax and the full groove ax preceded them.
