Stock 950 Coil VS 10' D2 Coil, MXT

I just recently bought a 10 Inch D2 Coil, well I got it with 75 % off with purchase of a MXT, just Waited awhile for the Coil to be Shipped, well, I have done a little Testing with it, and the D2 Coil Does not pick up small Led "BB Size" very well, has to be right up close to the Coil, same thing with about half of Gram of Gold. Barely picks it up, the Stock 950 Coil picks up both much better, I understand both Coils are not made for the Fine small gold, but it has me a little discouraged of using my New D2 Coil, I am afraid of taking it out, what will I be missing? VS the 950? I have not even gotten to do a field test with it "actually using it" I just did a few air tests, which I believe air tests are not completely accurate, but, I am just concerned, is the 10 Inch D2 coil better then the Stock 950 Coil, I have read a lot about both of them, seem to be comparable, but, any opinions on people that have used both of these Coils?... and yes, I know there are many threads about comparing coils, but most are with the 6X10 Coil... any personal opinions? am I just jumping the gun and assuming the worse? since I Have not even gotten to take it out? you got to understand, I am sick, I have the Flu, and stuck at home, and its driving me crazy! lol Thanks guys! and Gals!

The D2 will get deeper targets than the 950, I try and run +2 gain and can get silver dimes at 10"+ but smaller coils are more sensitive to smaller targets so if your looking for stuff smaller than a dime a smaller coil might be the way to go. Small 22 bullets that are deep will drive you crazy with the D2 coil as something that small in the dirt is a pain to find, this is where a pinpointer will speed up things so you can get on to a good target. When air testing you should lock tracking so the detector isn't trying to track out ground minerals as this can affect the depth you get. HH

Since it's a forum and there is never a shortage of opinions flying around presented as fact, I'll weigh in too.

I own both and since I've had the D2, the ol' 950 just sits. No need to ever put it on again. OP mentioned lead BB size targets...I dug a BB (weaker but repeatable and steady signal) at exactly 9"(measured with Garrett Pro Pointer).
I dunno if the D2 is truly deeper but it certainly isn't any less deep.
Other people have mentioned that they don't like how it pinpoints compared to a concentric. I'm not one of those. I prefer how the DD's pinpoint compared to the concentrics.
Best thing about the D2 compared to the 950 is it won't hide good targets when next to garbage. The D2 will hit the prize every time. I know people fine good targets next to trash with the 950 too but try this and you'll see what I'm talking about...
1) take a good item and place it close and to the left of a bad target.(something that you would normally disc out)
2) Pass the 950 coil over the two objects moving from left to right. The 950 should hit the good one w/o an issue.
3) Now pass the 950 over the two items from right to left. Pretty good chance you just missed the goodie!
As long as you are passing over the good first it won't be a problem. However what are you missing when you pass garbage first?
With the D2 you don't have that issue. Bang Bang Bang hits the good stuff every time!

*edit* If you just find that you don't like the D2, give me a holler, I'll gladly work a trade on one of my 950's (one's brand new)

Use the 4x6 for close areas and the 6x10 for open areas
The stock coils that Whites puts on their machines make no sense

The smallest gold that I've found using the D2 coil was soon after I bought my V3i, I was at a friends house showing him how to use my MXT, well as we were both detecting his front yard (old, built in 1830's) I got a low reading with my V3i which read 10", he came over to watch as I was sifting through the sandy dirt in my hand to see what I'd found. He was amazed that I was able to find something this small. It wasn't 10 inches though, more like 4 inches down ;D

I for one much prefer the 950 to the D2. I see you live in Northern CA and assume you will be doing some nugget shooting in the Sierras. My own experience and from what I've gathered from the Forums, It seems that those that prefer the D2 , for the most part, live in the East while those of us living in the West prefer the 950 coil. I think the 950 pinpoints better than the D2 and it also runs quieter on the west coast beaches. For the MXT, I like the 6x10 DD coil. Good depth, good target separation and much more sensitive to small targets like small nuggets. It's shape and solid bottom also help while nugget shooting in rocky areas.

Good info. But i dont have the 6 x 10.. i have the 10 dd. The 950 seems to b better with small gold over my 10 dd. It barely picks up. .5 gram which the 950 picks up from several inches. That was a air test though. I have used the dd more and i am starting to like it. I do want a 4x6 DD shooter for small gold.
