Dug this about 2 feet in the ground in a hut-site. Also found a couple bullets around it,etc., It is brass. IMO i think it is a body belt that could have been worn in battle, it is fairly light and fits perfectly around your stomach area, I did not find the other connecting piece to it. Any help? thanks.

Could also be something that could have attached to a horse too? :icon_scratch:

I know they had a form of body armor but don't know what it looked like. Could be a part of it.HH.

I've seen civil war body armor before at the shows that kind of body armor goes up to the chest and most were left behind in camps even though they say they are credited for saving 1000s of lives during the war (you can google Civil War body armor and get example of what those looked like). I was told by a expert in this kind of stuff that they had other types of body armor also, some only protected the stomach area and your major organs (kinda like a body belt which i think this is) while others covered your whole chest and that some soldiers were always experimenting with ways to protect themselves in battle. Really would like to know because I can put this around my lower body and it fits perfectly then I can see a belt/rope going thru those holes and attaching it, you can see this piece connected to another piece just like this. Thanks! :piratehand:

In your pic 100_0271, I get the impression that the piece is missing its upper left and lower left corners, as if they broke off somehow. When I look at that pic, I think the piece was once symmetrical, and the triangle at the top was a lip insert, possibly to a large strip of leather or another piece of metal. Does it look to you like those corners were broken off at some point, or was it made that way?

Cti - Yep the corner was broken off like that, would be the reason they left it behind, it would have taken a significant blow of something for that piece to break like that. Either during a battle or if it was used on a horse or stretched, etc. Will try and get video of it and post the edges when i get back to the house. thanks all :occasion14:
