The hard drive on my main computer crashed the other day. After looking at options I ended up buying a new computer. The new computer didn't come with a modem and since we had already decided to upgrade to DSL in the fall, we are now moving it up a couple of months, but it won't be installed until next Friday (7/6).

Worst part will be recreating some of my data files that were not backed up.... :P
Not a complete loss, but I did lose some stuff (not enough to pay to get the data back though). The tracking list is online and almost up to date so I will only lose a few days.

My personal tracking lists.... well its a good thing I posted almost everything this year as I essentially have a backup of "most" of the data related to CRH since my last backup. Just have to pull back together that which I lost from my posts.

I can still post/monitor with my wife's laptop, but I don't like using it so I am most likely just going be pretty quiet for the next week and a half. I am posting this at work, which I don't like to do often.

Also take this as a reminder for those that don't think about it.....backup your important data... often.

You can recover stuff off of dead drives.

If the thing works at all, there are programs to do that.

And there are companies who specialize in data retrieval from dead hard drives.

Just my 2 cents, if you have any data you can't live without that got 'lost'.

Good luck to ya!

Yes, I called to get a quote just to check prices.....$100 for a diagnosis and he said the typical quote was $500 to $2500 to actually get the data. Nothing I lost was worth that much that I can think of yet... though I'll keep the hard drive for now until I am sure.

No problem, when you get back on, just post how many more IH's you had found! ;D

Good luck getting back on line. Looking to forward to hearing about more bag finds!

(I'm not sure how much you know about computers - so if this is dumb, ignore me)

When most of my friends have a computer with which the hard drive crashed I was able to get their data off the "crashed" hard drive by temporarily putting it into another machine as a 2nd hard drive. Perhaps someone at the office can help?

There is a program out there called Lost & Found. I got it free once when I bought a battery backup. Within a year my hard drive crashed it could not bring back any programs but all my files were saved. When my drive crashed it looked like the disk was wiped clean but they were still someplace to recover.
