Re: Please say it's a Civil War Button...

I can't read the backmark and they often will help you date a flat or coin button. The shank or loop on the back can also help you date the button. Civil war sites often yield a nice assortment of flat buttons. From the hunting I have done over the last twenty years I seem to drop out of flat buttons from around the 1880s on. I don't have any scientific research on this other than I just don't find them in house sites of that age or newer. Good chance your button goes back to the civilwar era or even before. Try and identify the back mark for us.

Re: Please say it's a Civil War Button...

It's probably from earlier than the CW. :( :) However, civilians, slaves and some lesser outfitted soldiers (generally CS) used flat buttons even during the war. Generally speaking if you find other things from the CW time period in the yard, it would seem more likely to be from then too.

Keep working it and see what else you find.

Cleaning:

If it's one piece, it won't fall apart. If you can't read any backmark, you might as well clean it with water and
a soft tooth brush to see if there is anything on the back. It doesn't look to have anything on the front from these pics.
