I got about 10 pieces of heavy teapots, dishes, etc. today from a friend's mom that's cleaning out a kitchen she works at. Most of them are all un-usable because of big dents or they are crushed. My question is how can I tell if they're sterling silver? One of them says "Oneida Silversmiths" on the bottom and the others are unmarked as far as I can see. They all have a yellow tarnish on them which lead me to believe they were sterling silver since I don't really know anything else that they make dinnerware out of except sterling silver that would tarnish. Also, if it actually is sterling silver, how much would I expect to get out of it?

A lot of stuff like Wm Rogers, Oneida, and others are actually siverplate-meaning a base metal underneath. Most sterling items will be marked as such...either Sterling or .925. And yes silverplate will tarnish like silver.
