I know what the item is. I would like to know if anyone can ID who made it. My first thought was Tiffany. Firefox users can press Ctrl ++ to enlarge the image and Ctrl -- to return it to normal size. The center character in the hallmark appears to a 'T'. I have had it for a couple of years, but, unfortunatley I can find no Tiffany guru database.

The best I can tell you is that it was found near downtown Houston on land that has seen homesteads spring up and fall down since the 1840s. It was found less than a mile from the original site of Sam Houston' home. I found it about 10" deep. Sounded like a dime on it's side. It was so faint, I almost gave up. All help is appreciated.

Re: Sterling Silver Compact

Perhaps the Thomae company? Note the Hallmark on the below link. Not exact, but perhaps a cruder example than the one on the page? The outer design is the same, and the inner, central "T" is pretty close.

I personally think that it is solved. Great IDing, Kevo :icon_thumright: Cannot see maker's mark details but it looks very much like Thomae. Tiffany have never used pictorial marks (I have a database of their marks 1848 - up to now). Super find anyway.

Re: Sterling Silver Compact

Hard to tell the size from the picture. Is it hinged or a removable cap? No doubt it's silver, but if the lid is removable, it may be a snuff box. Snuff was quite popular about that time. M :dontknow: nty

What do I think? I think you have nailed it. I will contact the company and see if someone there can tell me about the model number. I doubt anyone will mess with it but, it's worth a try.

Thanks kevo!

Unfortunately the item is slighty bent in the middle. It was hinged originally and has a little stub-type snap closure. It closed the same way as the old aspirin tins did. There is a circular 'frame' inside that prolly once housed a mirror. Thanks everyone.

That's a cool feature isn't it?! It's great for those items that have high resolution.

OK....I am going to mark this one as solved.
