I bought this sterling 8 oz bowl from a estate sale for 80$ today. What company is it? It is marked sterling and under that it has the numbers 83 under it; probably the product number and it has a tree stamp punched into it. This bowl also has the numbers 29/39 hand carved by someone in it. This piece weighs 8.2 ounces. This piece also has what appears to be B.C.H carved into it with big letters. I also got a very small silver spoon with the same B.C.H but the spoon says S. Kirk and Son. The spoon is made out of silver but is alloyed with a magnetic metal and it makes this plate slightly magnetic. Can anyone give me a hand identifying who made it or any item specifics Thanks. Help with a sterling mark

I have a tray that is marked BCH in cursive and sterling 83 but no company name how ever it does have a tree punched in it.
The BCH matches a tiny sterling spoon I have that is for the S Kirk & son company.
Is this tray from the S kirk & son company too?WP_20150327_098[1].jpgWP_20150327_099[1].jpgWP_20150327_094[1].jpgWP_20150327_095[1].jpg

The middle would have someones initials.

The small tiny one on the bottom is the one we need to see.

Here's the important part, can you get a closeup shot of that stamp?

Help with a sterling mark

Anyone recognize this sterling mark? It is just a tree punched into a bowl as a mark. The top says sterling 83 but it is suprising my piece tested sterling and the company didn't even bother to but a company name just that it was sterling. Is this just a generic piece or does the tree represent something? someone carved into the piece very slightly 29/39 so i am guessing it is from 1939? Were they required to mark it back then. I know in the 1830's they made sterling out of coins and weren't required to mark it. Anyone know which company it might be?3.jpg2.jpg4.jpg5.jpg

The tree is most likely the company makers mark. It could be an arrow head, a top or other mark as well. I did a brief search with no luck.

Hi; I can tell you that the piece is made of Coin Silver. Here is the Article on it.:

[h=3]American silver falls roughly into two categories.[/h]Prior to 1850-ish silver was made from “coin silver” – literally melted silver coins. The silver content ranged from approx. .892-.900. and pieces were generally only stamped with a makers mark. There were some exceptions.

Good Luck. PEACE:RONB

The fact that it's stamped "sterling" means that it is NOT coin silver unless it's a falsification. The fact that it's stamped sterling also shows that the piece is much more contemporary than pre-1850.
