Hey good folks, I've managed to pull out another B.S. (before snow) find. It was found in the yard of an 1830's homestead. It's a sterling silver shoe button hook that appears to be British. It is monogramed with an Old English "O" on the handle. The makers marks are a B*S, an anchor, a lion, and a Y. On the other side is another lion and a Y. On the skinny part of the hook, it is embossed ???? as you can see from the last pic. I think the next to the last work is MAKE and the last word may be the STER for sterling. Any information and date would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Breezie

7th listing down on RH side.

The marks on the 'back' say English Made (or make?) Ster

Cheers, Mike

Thanks CKaufman and Mike. . . .I noticed on the site, it stated the same mark was used in 1896 and 1926. I'm assuming by 1926 most people were 'over' button shoes. (Would they have loved Velcro or what? lol) Also major ^5 Mike on reading the script. Now that you've said it, I can see it.

What does the "Y" mean?

LOL...yeah Breezie...I was also trying to figure that out myself. :icon_scratch: 27 letters<100 numbers :dontknow:

http://www.silvercollection.it/englishsilvermarksXS.html Here's another

According to that website, Birmingham with a Y with the lion & anchor with no duty mark is 1796; that couldn't be right. Button shoes were in vogue around the 1870's, so the hooks had to come later. Breezie

It appears the company started 1896ish...and registered their trademark 1905 or 06.
