Sterling Maker's Mark

Hey Folks,

I am having a bit of trouble with a sterling maker's mark. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera with me, so no photos. I found a pair of spoons with "O. O. Stillman" (NJ retailer), lion passant, anchor (Birmingham), PAT 95, the letter G (date), and the maker's mark shown in my drawing. Anyone have a good silver book that would tell me who this maker was? I checked with 925-1000.com and couldn't spot it.

Re: Sterling Maker's Mark

I'm not clear if you mean both spoons have all of these markings?

Gorham made spoons for O.O. Stillman :

http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...d=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&source=www.google.com

Anyway, I did find something about the T in a diamond shape :

http://www.examiner.com/sterling-silver-in-national/gorham-weight-marks-t-r-h-etc

Up until the 1980's, Gorham sterling was available in different weights:

H - Heavy
E - Extra Heavy
M - Massive
R - Regular
T - Trade

You can see an example of the "T" weight mark in the picture (inside the diamond shape). The weight mark may appear in different places on pieces. We see them most often on teaspoons. "T" and "R" are the most common.

Re: Sterling Maker's Mark

That's it. Pattern is exactly the same as this spoon. I believe you have identified it without a picture. Pretty impressive. So, it sounds like it's a quality mark, and if I'm reading it correctly, this "trade" weight is probably their low end silver. And yes, both spoons are the same. Armed with your reply, they are Gorham, Chantilly pattern, Five O'clock Teaspoons. Well done!!

No problem. Check the hallmark page to date your spoons. Oh, nice finds !
