Sterling Hallmark on a ring

I found this ring in the surf. It was totally crusted over and had been in the water for quite some time. I cleaned the ring with electrolysis and it turned out pretty nice.

The mold casting has lots of flaws, and I'm hoping that might give some clues as to how modern, or old, this ring is.

The word Sterling fades off around the L and there is a mark above the words.

To me it looks like a half moon shape and a couple of vertical lines extending downward.

Has anyone seen this type of mark before?

Hey thanks, still hoping one of out TN smart person's will know something about the hallmark.

I've searched and can't find anything matching this one and I'd really like to get some kind of a time frame on this piece.

I did get a jeweler to confirm that the stone is onyx. He couldn't tell me anything about the markings though...
