I dug this spoon bowl today and was using the Equinox 600. The tone was mid for sure and the VDI 14. I mention that because silver would have been a high-tone with numbers about twice that. My first impression was "pewter". The stem was not in the hole; too bad because it may have lent much more to the approximate date of the spoon. The bowl measures 21 mm wide by 38 mm long.

This other Treasurenet post shows at least one spoon that has a similar stem to bowl attachment. http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/329847-3-silver-spoons.html

Any help in putting a time-frame on this partial piece is appreciated.

I think that thread you added a link to pretty much says most of what you have. Sadly the handle is missing and that may have given more information about it. I guess all an all it's a good indicator to keep searching that area.

Thanks Grant! The area in question was mowed recently. It's a little challenging to detect with the grass clumps and irregular surface. I dug numerous square nails where this bowl came from.
