Wisconsin Gov. Walker defies order to close federally-funded parks

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is defying a directive from the National Park Service to close down several state parks that receive federal funding in the wake of the partial government shutdown.

The Republican governor has directed the state Natural Resources Department to keep open parks that receive a majority of their funding from the state, The Hill reported.

The department recently intervened after the Fish and Wildlife Service placed barricades near a Mississippi River boat launch because it was on federal land. The barricades were removed because of a decades-old agreement between Wisconsin and the federal government, state officials said.

"We respect the magnitude of the process the federal government has had to undertake to close its properties and certain activities on properties they own and manage," Cathy Stepp, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, told agency employees in an email obtained by The Hill.

"However, after close review and legal consult, [the Department of Natural Resources] has clarified areas where the federal procedures are over-reaching by ordering the closure of properties where the state has management authority through existing agreements."

State officials also said Wisconsin will not not fully follow a Fish and Wildlife Service directive that hunting and fishing be prohibited on federal lands during the partial shutdown, according to the report.

"Blame can go around for everybody," Walker, a GOP leader contemplating a presidential bid, said recently when asked about the shutdown. "The best way to resolve it? Just look at what we did in Wisconsin. We had a $3.6 billion budget deficit. We now have more than half a billion surplus."

Meanwhile, in Arizona, Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake can't understand why federal authorities have refused Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's offer to use state money to keep the Grand Canyon open during the government shutdown.

Several businesses have made similar pledges, but they've been rejected by the National Park Service.

A park official said this week that as long as the federal government remains shut down, such a plan isn't an option.

McCain and Flake sent a letter Friday to Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.

The two Arizona Republicans say "federal statutes extend broad discretionary authority" for Sewell to accept donated funds for purposes of operating the national park system.

Late Friday, Brewer and state legislative leaders sent a letter to President Obama urging him to approve funding the Arizona park and other national parks.

The politicians said in a news release that at the very least they want the president to allow for state and private funding to reopen the parks.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

This really helps to show how the BO is trying to make the shutdown uncomfortable for all Americans. Since it doesn't impact most of us normally, he is using theatrics to play to the lowest denominator.

I was kind of hoping they'd shut down the CDC, I mean, what could possibly go wrong? It's not like some company wouldn't make sure any of their products

are tainted. The less regulators the better I say, and as far as national parks, they'd look a lot better if they didn't have all those trees on them and a bunch

of oil derricks and fracking wells instead.

As St. Ronnie once state in reference to the Sequoia National Forest, "You've seen one tree, you've seen them all".

You are right Davest, they should at least limit the cdc. And start examining incoming toys from China.

Most national parks do not need the armies of rangers and bureaucrats they have, they are there to limit your freedom to land you are paying for. And many times causing damage to the ecosystem in each one by inserting misguided ideas of how they should better control them.

I love the Sequoias too. The one that doesn't look like the others has a hole cut in it so cars could drive through it.

David are you referring to that Chicken thing? In my opinion it bullshert After working 36 years with over a 1000 guys who but a handful new how to cook.
The way we threw chicken around without all the antibacterial crap they sell I can not think of one firefighter going home sick from chicken bacteria.
Funny how these recalls come up at the opportune time. You'd think lawsuits would keep these Co's clean not the goofs who work for the king.
cause if they knew what they were doing this would have been the only instance, because of the kings punishment.

So when more and more states start legalizing MJ, I wonder if we will still hear from "state's rights" people then....

Yup...the whole "war on drugs" is a violation of personal freedom. Regardless of the outcome, it is nobody's business what a citizen of the US puts in their nose, or anywhere else, providing it isn't hurting anyone else. The reason the "war" can't be won is that people will NOT obey an immoral law...same reason prohibition didn't work. Immoral laws will NEVER work. All this so-called "war" is doing is keeping profits high for the drug dealers, and causing untold death and destruction around the world. It has had zero effect on drug use.

I have no issue with laws against manufactured or processed drugs like heroin, cocaine etc, but do when they pass laws against any plant in its natural state.. Pot is not altered through a manufacturing process, it is a natural plant....

What I do in the privacy of my own home is my business as long as I am not hurting any other person, it is certainly not the Feds business.

Reply to your "states rights" people.

So who were your "states rights" people?

I was asking who you were referring to when you said "we". You and other people that agree with you on T-net, or something more general than that?

And by "states rights people" I was referring to those who make a habit of invoking "states rights" whenever the Federal government does things they don't like.

Wasn't necessarily referring to TN but to all the people who believe in states rights as guaranteed by our Constitution.
