Legend has it some hostile tribe drove 27 people to the top of this mesa where they died of thirst and starvation, hence the name Starvation Peak. Some sources assert it was a freighter party on the Santa Fe Trail, which was nearby and makes sense. Others believe it was during the Revolt of 1680, which would mean the legend had to come down through tribal tradition [since nobody survived to tell the tale]. According to those who believe it was part of the Terrors of 1680, the group included a number of Franciscan priests.

Others yet say it's 'just another story', though the peak has carried that name as long as history remembers.

In any case, it's a nice climb, interesting view and plenty to poke around with once you're up there, though a bit snakey.
